Overview
Located in Astoria, New York, Saint Markella is the Cathedral of the Genuine Orthodox Church of America. The Cathedral was established by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Petros of Astoria in 1954 to serve the pious Orthodox Christians in the area who remained loyal to the Patristic Calendar. Since that time, it has become the Cathedral parish of the Holy Metropolis of the G.O.C. of America, whose current bishop is His Eminence, Metropolitan Demetrius.
DAY Elevator & Lift installed Savaria’s V-1504 vertical platform lift in this Cathedral to improve accessibility to the basement social area.
The Challenge
This old Cathedral has a magnificently decorated interior with wood-sculpted ceilings, wall panels and molding. They needed accessibility to the social area in the basement for the aging congregation.
They called us for the right accessibility solution.
The Solution
Our team of technicians evaluated the building’s design and worked with the architect, engineers and millworkers to design a wheelchair lift in the hoistway by incorporating the wood-sculpting into hoistway walls. We installed Savaria’s V-1504 vertical platform lift that is built to carry a wheelchair and a passenger safely up and down one or more levels.
The lift travels up and down a rail system enclosed in the lift tower. The tower is supported with attachment to an existing wall or through a constructed hoistway. As the drive system is contained within the lift tower, no additional machine room is required for installation.
We also left the hoistway open to maintain the appearance of a spatial high ceiling of the sanctuary.
