Elevator Cab Upgrades – Factors to be Considered

Elevator Cab Upgrades
June 10, 2015DAYElevatorLiftElevators

As most elevators are used several times a day, building owners need to recognize the importance of installing reliable and efficient systems. However, despite maintenance and regular servicing, the devices can cause problems or suffer wear and tear because of continuous or prolonged use. Though a well maintained lift may last for 20 years or more, it usually becomes necessary to upgrade its major components at regular intervals. Here are some of the factors that need to be considered when upgrading your accessibility system.

Elevator Cab Upgrades

  • It is important to consider what the upgrade will cost. A pre-modernization evaluation can help identify the components most in need of improvement. Requirements could include replacement of cab walls and ceilings, resurfacing of cab panels, increasing ceiling height, new fixtures or relocation of existing fixtures and installation of an emergency telephone. The evaluation will help you get an idea about what the upgrade will cost.
  • An elevator is a moving device and any addition or reduction in weight capacity may significantly affect the leveling accuracy of the device. In most cases, lifts require adjustments after a cab is modernized. If this is necessary, you would need to call professional elevator technicians to make the necessary adjustments.
  • Lift doors are prone to wear and tear due to constant use. For older equipment, many parts that need to be refurbished are often not available and hence a complete replacement would be required. This may include replacement of existing door operation, replacement of door re-opening devices (safety edge or dual-beam light ray) with a light curtain which protects passengers from being struck by the door.
  • If you want to give the system a new look, consider modern fixtures. For instance, new hall and call buttons can make a big difference to its appearance. Modern digital position indicators with electronic tones and voice annunciation can transform the way your elevator works while promoting better ADA compliance.
  • Are you planning a phased modernization? If you are upgrading the doors, you can first install a closed-loop door operator system and set up a new control system at a later stage. In this case, you need to ensure that the door operators chosen are consistent with the controls equipment that will be installed later.

Modernizing your elevator can prove a strategic capital investment and mitigate performance slips.
