The U.S. has a huge cohort of independent living seniors, and this segment of the population has become an important customer base for builders and accessibility equipment suppliers. Building an elder-friendly house would mean taking account of their special needs and creating an environment that is conducive to their wellbeing.
According to a 2014 American Community Survey, approximately 6.8 million seniors with disabilities live independently. That number would have definitely gone up since then. The report shows that the total number of seniors with disabilities living alone as a proportion of the total senior population in some states is as high as 17.5%. Up to 20.6 million in this group have serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
